Mina ran her finger along the edge of the standard-issue hospital blanket that covered her while she listened to the police officer assigned to her case at six o’clock in the morning on Wednesday. . Purple bruises marred her wrists, a testament to the nightmare she’d endured. The mild scent of antiseptic cleaner wafted over her, a constant reminder of where she was. Outside in the hallway, staff members wheeled other patients past her room. She wondered what their stories were, what they were going through.

A short, blonde nurse with a pixie cut hovered over her like a mother bird, clearly unappreciative of the presence of the detective talking to her.

She tried not to smile at his nervousness around the woman.

Though small, it was clear she was a force to be reckoned with. She slipped her charge's finger into the pulse oximeter to check her oxygen level again, allowing herself ample time to frown at the lawman during the process.

Mina smiled, attempting to reassure her she was okay. Then she turned her attention back to the detective.

He’d already questioned her once, but she still didn’t understand what really happened, other than the identity of her abductor. Maybe she’d get some answers this time. The struggle in her home and the boxed prison were the only things she remembered until she woke up in the ambulance.

According to the doctor, she’d hyperventilated and lost consciousness from the lack of oxygen and the trauma. Physically, she escaped with only a concussion and a few scrapes and bruises.

But how had they found her?

She focused on him, wincing when her head began to ache again.

The nurse exited the room to get her more medicine after warning him not to upset her patient.

Mina made a mental note to send her flowers after she was released this afternoon. Crystal —as her name tag read— was a saint.

“Ms. Durante?”

“Oh, sorry, Detective Matthews. Please. Continue.”

“As I was saying, Phillip claims God called him on the telephone and told him it was time for him to come for you.” At Mina's bewildered expression, he explained further. “We contacted his psychiatrist, who confirmed that he suffers from schizophrenia. He stated that God also told him to stop taking his medication. We'll check his phone records, but we're pretty sure he was having delusional episodes. Anyway, he planned to pick you up and hide out in an old run-down shack north of here. Thankfully, he didn’t make it that far. The place was….disturbing. He still thinks you were waiting for him and says he did nothing wrong. He also said you knew he was living in the empty house next door. That you waved to him.”

A wave of nausea rolled through her stomach. “That was him? All that time? I thought it was Mr. Garner, the man who lives there.”

“We checked on Mr. Garner. He’s staying with relatives in Florida.”

Now it all made sense. She had waved at Phillip, thinking it was Mr. Garner. In his diseased mind, she’d agreed to his psychotic plan.
